Chavez: 'Very Good News for Albuquerque'

Eclipse is reborn! It's called Eclipse Aerospace and it will buy all the assets of Eclipse Aviation Corp. According to Mayor Chavez, "Their intent is to go back into production." This is great news for our city and it's coming during tough economic times.

According to the Mayor, he is "at about 98 percent certainty that Eclipse has been saved. The Mayor continues:

This is very good news for the city of Albuquerque. I believe it will come to fruition. These are serious aviation people.

The company will take questions after the deal is closed. That date is projected for Aug. 24th. The Associated Press reports on the Mayor's announcement:

He said the company intends to bring back Eclipse Aviation employees but predicted it won't initially employ the 800 workers furloughed just before Eclipse Aviation shut down in February 2008.

Chavez also said it's possible other potential buyers could step forward before the Aug. 24 deadline but indicated he didn't believe that was likely.

Chavez said he knew of two or three potential overseas bids that might compete with the Eclipse Aerospace effort. He noted he met earlier this year in Paris with a French aviation company that subsequently dropped out.

The new corporation could move into buildings previously leased by Eclipse Aviation, which would generate $1.2 million for the city.

We're in the midst of a global economic crisis from which no one is immune. Considering the crisis, this accomplishment is of particular note. It's realization is a testament to a strong and tenacious leader who loves his city and is committed to it's growth. Today... more than ever, we need a Mayor with a proven track record of delivering real results for our city.

Outside Magazine: ABQ Among America's Best Cities

Albuquerque is ranked among the top 10 cities in America in this month's Outdoor Magazine writing, "few cities in the Southwest enjoy their own versions of Albuquerque's main attractions: a surplus of sunshine, mild weather, and easy access to trails, rivers, and mountains."

Read the full review:

A few cities in the Southwest enjoy their own versions of Albuquerque's main attractions: a surplus of sunshine, mild weather, and easy access to trails, rivers, and mountains—like the 10,678-foot granite escarpment above town. But what sets the Duke City apart these days is stability. Off the speculators' radar, Albuquerque was relatively unscathed by the circus-tent collapse of the housing market, even as its economy—bolstered by growth in the high-tech, film, and renewable-energy industries—has remained stable. The upshot? It now boasts the fifth-lowest unemployment rate among major U.S. cities. And when all those workers are ready to blow off some steam, the city welcomes them with more green space per capita than any on our list—including easy-access singletrack and the 38,000-acre wilderness just east of the city. Plus three ski areas (including the steeps of Taos), fly-fishing in the Jemez Mountains, and Class IV whitewater are all within day-trip range. Take that, Phoenix. It's also a good place to save: The low cost of living and reasonably high wages in professional fields put Albuquerque fifth on Salary.com's list of the best U.S. cities for building personal net worth—meaning you'll have all the more means to gear up for time off the clock.

We all know Albuquerque is a great place to live. And, Mayor Chavez is committed to making it even better.

Central Labor Council Endorses Chavez for Mayor

The Central New Mexico CLC represents 35 unions and 47,000 employees. They heard from all the mayoral candidates and voted to endorse a true friend of New Mexico's working families, Mayor Marty Chavez.

CLC President Daniel Rivera:

Many cities across this nation have cut back services and jobs, but Albuquerque has managed to maintain many of its services, while keeping its workforce employed. This is a credit to everyone involved—the Mayor, the City Council, and, most of all, the workers.

Mayor Chavez will continue to be a fiscally responsible steward of the city's budget and a champion for Albuquerque's working families.

The Results Are In

Yesterday, Mayor Chavez hit a home run at the Economic Forum Debate! He demonstrated that he is the only candidate in this race with a clear command of the issues. It is evident that the Mayor has the right combination of experience and results to capably guide our city through these tough economic times, while his opponents offered up no clear economic plans.

Yesterday at the forum, Mayor Chavez demonstrated that he has the vision, the leadership skills, and has produced the results our city needs. I'd like to invite you to join the Mayor's team and volunteer for his campaign! There is so much work to be done and we need your help.

  • to continue the success of the safe city strike force
  • to continue the success of the auto theft authority
